Attention: Massachusetts Administrators and Educators!
Media Literacy Now was selected by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to produce a landscape report on media literacy education in Massachusetts. As part of this work to better understand media literacy education efforts and needs in the state, we are surveying school leaders, teachers, and staff.
This is an excellent opportunity for school administrators and teachers to have a say in what resources will be available. And yet, fewer than half of the districts have participated in the survey so far. Maximum participation is crucial, which is why we’ve extended the deadline to December 20. Participants will be asked about their understanding of media literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, or AI literacy, and they will estimate the prevalence of various instructional practices in their workplace. The online survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.
We seek the participation of:
- Superintendents
- Principals
- Curriculum Directors
- Social Studies Department Chairs and classroom teachers
- ELA Department Chairs and classroom teachers
- Library/Media Specialists
- School Counselors
- Technology Specialists
- Art, Music, and Health classroom teachers
If you live in Massachusetts, we invite you to reach out to your school district and encourage their participation in the survey. Here is a recent summary of the districts that have participated — we are aiming for 6 responses from each district. Leominster and Westborough are among the forward-looking districts that have responded robustly. But the responses from places like Springfield, Lawrence, and even Boston, have been quite low. The deadline to complete the survey has been extended to December 20.
