(October 8, 2025) Boston, Mass.: Media Literacy Now launched the Oregon Media Literacy Coalition, advancing media literacy education throughout Oregon’s K-12 schools and establishing best practices that serve as a model for scalable policy impact in other states.
The Oregon Media Literacy Coalition is a partnership between Media Literacy Now and 24th Century Education, an Oregon-based education advocacy and consulting firm. The new coalition will create, curate, and distribute instructional resources to K-12 schools across Oregon. In addition to resource development, the coalition will facilitate coordination and collaboration of youth and community engagement as well as advocacy for media literacy instruction in K-12 schools.
This work expands Media Literacy Now’s coalition-building and advocacy work, which brings together a range of educators, experts, advocates, and other stakeholders to identify obstacles to getting media literacy instruction in classrooms and brainstorm ways to address these obstacles.
“Through our coalition-building efforts, stakeholders work toward the common goal of ensuring our public education system teaches K-12 students the necessary skills they need to be discerning media consumers and navigate safely within a complex media landscape,” said Kyra Brissette, CEO of Media Literacy Now. “We are excited to launch this Oregon-specific coalition to provide more support to educators and school leaders who recognize the importance of incorporating media literacy instruction but need a little support and direction to do so.”
The new project is in its building phase, seeking potential coalition members with members with experience in resource development, community engagement, and/or advocacy for media literacy in K-12 schools in Oregon or nationally.
“We know that while nationally 94% of youth agree that students need media literacy instruction, only 39% actually receive it,” said Brian Baker, Chief Learning Officer at 24th Century Education and project lead for the Oregon Media Literacy Coalition. “Our hope is that the Oregon Media Literacy Coalition can serve as a model for other states hoping to build bridges between organizations and create a lasting foundation for the media literacy instruction that is so vital for today’s youth.”
The Oregon Media Literacy Coalition is supported by The Yarg Foundation, a family foundation promoting social equity in Oregon communities.
