Media Literacy bill moves forward

Your advocacy efforts pay off

The Education Committee at the Massachusetts Statehouse has favorably reported S213 and H472, the Media Literacy in Schools bill, allowing it to advance to the next phase. It’s not over yet, but this is a big step in getting Media Literacy into our schools as a matter of policy. Thank you for your calls, emails and letters to legislators. It worked! Congratulations.

What next?

The committee added Media Literacy language to a bill focused on civic engagement among youth and includes several bills redrafted into one new bill. This is often the way related bills are handled. The bill calls on the Department of Education to incorporate Media Literacy education into model civics curriculum units within the history/social science curriculum framework. The bill, S2027, has been referred to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. Stay tuned for next steps.
