A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled “The revised school code,” (MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1292.

To insure that all of the following are met regarding information technology in schools:

  1. Adequate internet filtering is installed… to prevent the viewing of harmful content…
  2. A policy requiring safe technology utilization and digital citizenship is adopted and implemented…
  3. Steps are taken to provide for… safe technology utilization and digital citizenship that will promote smart media and online choices…

“…To ensure that the school curriculum includes an age-appropriate lesson of instruction on Internet safety to be taught at least once each school year to pupils in grades 1 to 12.”

The wording of the bill matched the language of an Illinois law on internet safety education. See Illinois Legislation page.

The required topics within the bill:

  • Safe and responsible use of social networking websites
  • Recognizing, avoiding, and reporting online solicitations by sexual predators
  • Risks of transmitting personal information on the Internet
  • Recognizing and avoiding unsolicited or deceptive communications received online
  • Recognizing and reporting online harassment and cyberbullying
  • Reporting illegal activities and communications on the Internet
  • Copyright laws on written materials, music, photographs and videos
