Academic standards – model curriculum.
This section of the Ohio Educational Code requires that the State Board of Education periodically adopt statewide academic standards with “emphasis on coherence, focus, and essential knowledge and that are more challenging and demanding when compared to international standards for kindergarten – 12 in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.”
The Board is also required to ensure that the standards:
- Include the essential academic content and skills that students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level that will allow each student to be prepared for postsecondary instruction and the workplace for success in the twenty-first century;
- Include the development of skill sets that promote information, media, and technological literacy.
Part of an omnibus budget bill (2009) that directs the state Board of Education to revise the current academic standards in core subjects; requires the Board to adopt statewide academic standards that include the development of skill sets that promote information, media, and technological literacy.
The language was slightly revised in 2014.
